Last day to Roam

Yesterday (when I wrote this) was our last day in Rome. The day started with a short bus tour of the ancient city center. While it rained outside we were able to see the Circus Maximus, Colosseum, St. Maria Major, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arch of Constantine, and the old offices of the Mussolini regime. After the bus tour we took a short walk to the Fonta di Trevi, where if you throw in a coin over your left shoulder while facing away from the fountain you wish to return to Rome and if you throw two you wish to get married in Rome.

Then we walked to see the Spanish Embassy to the Vatican. The Spanish Steps stood just across the way, which was named after the Embassy. At the foot of the steps stood an Italian fountain called the Ugly Boat, which looked like it was sinking, and at the top is a French Church, while on the sides are two famous English buildings, one a hotel where the poets Keats and Shelly first met, the other the best tea house in all of Rome.

After this we were able to roam Rome on our own. My group started our free time by going to see the Colosseum up close along with the forum and Arch of Constantine. Afterwards we took the Metro to Ostri Antica, which is a well preserved port town to the south of Rome. The security measures in this ruined city were very lax. Only a few select portions of the city were roped off. You were able to walk freely among the ruins, entering the old bath houses, barracks, college of builders, the marketplace and the city’s amphitheatre.

We ended the night by singing during the service at the All Saint’s Church and directly afterwards held a concert.
